The movie ‘Stray Dogs’ made by Marziyeh Meshkiny, which was the sole representative of the Iranian cinema in the main competition section of the Venice Film Festival 2004, has won two international awards:

  1. The Silver Camera Award (for cultural and artistic communications). The award had been given to Takeshi Kitano from Japan last year.
  2. UNICEF Award

The Italian distributor of Stray Dogs, BIM Company, has screened the movie in Italy under the title ‘Little Thieves’. The film was screened simultaneously in 25 cities concurrent with concluding ceremony of the Venice Film Festival.

Makhmalbaf Film House has announced that the film was to be screened in Iran simultaneous with the Venice Film Festival and its videotape was to be released. However, after Farhang Cinema and Visual Media Institute changed their mind, screening of the film was cancelled in Iran.

The first film of Marziyeh Meshkiny, The Day I Became a Woman, was also screened in critics section of the Venice Film Festival in 2000 and has so far won three awards from the Venice Film Festival and 10 international awards from festivals held in Chicago in the United States, Pusan in South Korea, Nantes in France, Tsalonika in Greece, Toronto in Canada, the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) in France, Innsbruck in Austria, as well as Novo Cinema in Belgium.

Makhmalbaf Film House has said that since it considers the awards to belong to the Iranian society, it will give them in line with its traditional practice to Iran’s Cinema Museum. So far, 63 international awards won by Makhmalbaf Film House have been given to Iran’s Cinema Museum.
